If you’re reading this page, then you’re probably wondering what the different weather warnings terms that I used on this blog really mean. Here’s what you can expect when you read various different terms.
Weather Advisory
A weather advisory is issued 3-5 days before an event when the picture is generally unclear. A weather advisory may also be issued when the risk of disruption reaches 15-25%.
Weather Warning
A weather warning is issued when the risk of disruption reaches 30-50% so although severe weather is expected, its not expected to cause wide disruption. When this weather warning is issued the general public are advised to take caution while traveling.
Severe Weather Warning
A severe weather warning is issued when the risk of disruption reaches 50-80%. When this weather warning is issued the general public are advised to take extreme caution while traveling, and to allow extra time for journeys.
Extreme Weather Warning
An extreme weather warning will usually be issued within 6-12 hours of a severe weather event if the risk of disruption moves above 80%. Extreme weather warnings are only issued when the weather is expected to turn exceptionally dangerous. When this weather warning is issued the public are advised to stay indoors, and only travel if absolutely necessary.
