Berries – A precurser to Winter?

September 9, 2011

Every year once the berry crop has been recorded, we get the same old articles coming out asking the same old question; Does a good berry crop mean a harsh winter is on the way? The short answer is no.

Plants grow based on current, and previous weather conditions. This year for instance, we had a very warm, dry spring which was followed by a generally cool, and wet summer. For this reason, the berry crop has been excellent this year and in some areas, the best since the 1960’s. But this does NOT mean a cold winter is on the way, it’s simply evidence of a good growing season.

There is no scientific evidence, nor proof in history that shows us that an increased crop of berry means a harsh winter is on the way. It’s sadly, nothing more than an old wives tale.
